The Marshallese used to be among the world's greatest navigators. They only use stick-and-shell charts and stars as guides in traveling far distances in the ocean. As such, they are also expert canoe builders. Ship-building contests are like Olympics in the islands.
The Marshallese language is used by the government although English is used widely all throughout the islands. Owing to the Japanese occupation, Japanese is also spoken in some parts of the land, especially among the elderly.
Since the islands had been a US colony and some of the islands are still leased to the US military, most Marshallese people are Protestants.
