Butterworth (not to be mistaken as the town in South Africa or an ancient township in England) sounds foreign but this town has long been affectionately known as Bagan to its native inhabitants. Nestled in the state of Penang, it is surrounded by an interesting number of islands (Pulau Aman, Betong, Pinang and Rimau) which can be a good venue for a tropical getaway. The highlight, however, of visiting Butterworth remains to be the Penang Bird Park which houses more than 300 species of birds from Southeast Asia. A walk in the mammoth aviary is like visiting a kingdom ruled by hornbills and hawks among other feathered creatures. Taoist temple Rumah Berhala Tow Boo Kong and the Hindu temple Arulmigu Karumariamman, on the other hand, can give visitors an insight on how progressive Malaysia has become in terms of religious tolerance.
