More about Macedonia costs
Macedonia's official currency is the denar (MKD), where bills come in denominations of 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000, and 5000. Coins are divided into one, two, and five denar. Outside of Macedonia the denar is not convertible so make sure to exchange all your bills before departing. Some hotels, restaurants, and shops quote and accept prices in euro. Some establishments also accept US dollars as payment. There are a lot of accessible ATMs in the major towns and tourist areas. Credit cards are accepted in many businesses, particularly the Diners Club. The current conversion rate for 1 EUR is 61.4 MKD, while for 1 US Dollar it is 41.7 MKD.
Backpackers can survive on their meager budget by eating in the Skara (grill) restaurants. The up-market restaurants found on the waterfront usually charge high tourist prices. Shopping is no problem as the Republic never runs out of bazaars and markets. The bazaars of Skopje, Ohrid, Bitoal, and Tetovo have large markets that sell food like dry peppers to fashionable fake designer apparel. Ohrid is well known for its many jewelers who sell their products at reasonable prices.
