Macau started out as a region under the jurisdiction of Panyu County, Nanhai Prefecture of the province of Guangdong. The peninsula was soon colonized by the Portuguese fleet sent to explore Asia and Africa. It became an important trading post until it was surrendered to China in 1999. To this day, Macau remains under the special administration of this country.
