Its riverside location is probably the prime reason why Savannakhet (officially called Muang Khanthabuli) is one of Laos' most thriving cities. This former French trade port boasts of pleasant townsfolk and the crumbling, yet still grandiose examples of colonial architecture. The name Savannakhet originated from the phrase Savanh Nakhone, which means "city of paradise." Though the town may not fit the paradise mold that most people think of, many are beguiled by its charm. Located on the shores of Mekong River, Savannakhet is a melting pot of Eurasian culture and serves as the capital of the province it shares the name with. Thai and Vietnamese influences are also evident around the town which has a large population of expatriates.
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Savannakhet is the That Ing Hang stupa, located north of the city. The temple's exterior may not be that regal, but inside, a treasure trove of bronze Buddha images of numerous sizes abound, making it as one of the country's holiest places. Another religious site is the 15th century Wat Sayaphum, whose exterior is much more vibrant than that of the previous stupa. Devotees flock to the temple yearly for occasions such as the Lao New Year, Buddhist Lent, and even the Boat-Racing Festival.
A trade city is guaranteed to be a good place for shopping, and Savannakhet offers no less. The Talaat Savanxay has a broad range of fresh products and other native items. A few nice places to eat offer a taste of Savan delicacies. After an arduous day of walking, tired tourists can get a genuine Lao massage in Dok Champa, found in the main street of the town. That too has become one of the major attractions of Laos.
