Spectacular waterfalls, lush greenery, and cool climate are only few of the reasons why Bolaven Plateau is considered Laos' own piece of paradise. An ideal place for a unique trek, the highland exudes a mystical appeal, giving the adventurer the feeling of being transported to a world where supernatural creatures exist. Tourists can even perchance meet tribal people who have made homes in the forest and learn of their well-preserved culture and tradition.
Located in the southern region of Laos, the Bolaven Plateau is not only rich culturally, but agriculturally as well. The French settlers began the cultivation of coffee, fruits, and spices like cardamom at the height of colonial times. Today, the locals still continue planting these cash crops as their primary source of income.
The Bolaven Plateau draws people with its stunning cascades, the most popular being Tad Lo Falls found in the northwestern edge of the highland. The 10-meter tier's prime lure is the verdant greenery and the series of granite steps which lead to the waterfall. A word of caution is to leave the waters by eight in the evening, as it is when the dam gates upstream are opened. The Tat Fan Falls, on the other hand, are twin falls that plunge from a height of 120 meter and meet in a single basin, mesmerizing with their beauty and raw power.
A visit to the highlands destination would be considered incomplete without going to the various tribes, such as the Laven (said to be the pioneering settlers in the Plateau), Alak and Katu (known for their tradition of buffalo sacrifice), and the Suay (believed to be the best elephant tamers). Their villages can be found near resorts, and tours are often arranged to pass through these communities to enable tourists to buy ethnic souvenirs.
