Nestled in the undulating Himalayas, Sikkim is a landlocked state teeming with breathtaking valleys, rustic ridge settlements, and friendly smiles from the locals. Here is where tired city slickers can arrive uninvited and still feel right at home. Outside the village, one can experience the natural splendor with a plethora of postcard-worthy views to photograph and an array of challenging terrains to conquer.
A visit to a number of Buddhist monasteries may also make up for a tranquil side-trip as the monasteries are where visitors can observe how the monks, despite their Spartan lifestyle of minimal worldly possessions, seem to be very contented and happy.
A favorite among mountaineers is the Nathu la Pass, one of the country's trade routes to China. It was closed during the 1962 Sino-Indian War, but was reopened in 2006 for tourists. Found east of Gangtok, this history-steeped thoroughfare offers sweeping views of the mountains, as well as the local flora and fauna.
Another attraction in East Sikkim is the Tsongmo Lake, which is deemed sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists. One may also want to visit the Rumtek Monastery, which is the prime seat of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. A visit to Sikkim might be incomplete without a taste of the millet beer, a local concoction. The small village of Thanggu takes pride of having some of the best millet beers in town.
