Bolivia has been constantly occupied for over 2000 years by the Aymara, an advanced civilization dependent on agriculture. The community grew from 600 to 800 AD and became an important force in southern Andes.
From 1438 to 1527, the Incan empire acquired much for what is present-day western Bolivia. Nonetheless, the Incans were not able to maintain their control over Bolivia since they are internally weak. This made the Spanish to easily conquer Bolivia in 1524.The country was then called "Upper Peru" and was under the control of the Viceroy of Lima.
Bolivia's fight for independence began in 1809. After 16 years of war, the republic was proclaimed on August 16, 1825, through the leadership of independence fighter, Simón Bolivar.
From mid-19th century to today, political and economic stability continues to become a challenge for Bolivia.
