Both historical and artistic in its heritage, Vitsebsk is a city of intrigue and vibrancy. The city was the birthplace of Marc Chagall, who had studied under the unparalleled Yudel Pyen. Pyen was responsible for opening Belarus' first art school in 1897. Other notable artists like Ilya Repin and Kasimi Malevich have blessed the city with their presence.
Centuries-old landmarks
Unlike Minsk, Vitsebsk echoes to a distant past with pre-Second World War houses that rest along the convergence of the Dvina, Vitba, and Luchesa Rivers. Vitsebsk is also home to one of the oldest buildings in Belarus, the Annunciation Church. Dating back to the Kievan Rus period, it was built in the 1140s then repaired in 1883. Although it was destroyed in 1961 by the Communist administration, its remains where conserved until 1992. It was then renovated to its supposed original appearance from centuries ago. Also rebuilt was the Resurrection Church, dating back to the 1700's.
Napoleon Bonaparte
Other town parts witnessed significant historical events. The town hall built in 1775 hosted Napoleon's 43rd birthday in 1812. Ironically, the town also has an obelisk that commemorates Russia's victory against Napoleon.
