Vitebsk's pride is the Annunciation Church. This 12th century building is the oldest and best preserved building in Belarus. It dates back as far as the period of Kievan Rus when it was first constructed in 1140s.
The Annunciation Church was renovated during the 14th century and again in the 17th century and again in 1883. The Communist government that ruled the area in 1961 almost completely destroyed the church. It wasn't until 1992 that what remains of the building was restored to its original appearance.
After the successful restoration of the Annunciation Church, other churches that were destroyed in the Polish-Lithuanian period are likewise being restored today.
