Xinaliq Travel Guide
A land that seems to have come straight out of a folktale, the ancient village of Xinaliq, perched on the top of the great Caucasus Mountains of Azerbaijan, is definitely one of the most sought after destinations in Azerbaijan. With its old stone houses, distinctly ethnic villagers and a pervading nomadic lifestyle, it is a place where time seems to have frozen making anyone feel to have stepped back to the Medieval Ages. A glimpse of the majestic landscape reveals unspoiled nature at its finest, its mountains changing colors readily at sunrise and sunset. A place of a remarkable and unique atmosphere, it is sure to attract every category of visitors.
Its history can be traced back more than 5,000 years ago. In fact the village is renowned as one of the oldest surviving settlements on the entire planet. It has an extremely rich cultural and historical heritage that will become evident even if the traveler mingles with the locals. They speak their language, known as Ketsch and they have their own time-tested habits. They are firm believers in the perpetuation of horse traveling. Its rugged and picturesque terrain makes it a mecca for backpackers and hikers looking for fantastic adventures. Campers will not be disappointed because there are many perfect sites for picnics and barbecues - definitely a wonderful family experience.
The land also has incredible archaeological sites which are more than footnotes to history. Take for instance, the Ateshgah of Baku, renowned as the "Fire Temple." Dating back to the 17th century, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that functioned as a Zoroastrian place of worship in its heyday. What has made it famous, however, is its unique natural gas pit wherein fires are known to erupt at any given time. One small caution to potential tourists: they should not be strict vegetarians because usually the only thing to eat is mutton and mutton alone.
