The Glossary
Ma'rib is auspiciously located on the Frankincense Route. It grew to affluence between the time of Queen Sheba and King Solomon. The road leading to Ma'rib is not a bed of roses since what are left of the halcyon days of the Sabaen Kingdom are only ruins and dust. It is difficult to imagine how such a grand kingdom could fall into pieces in just a blink of an eye. In this side of the world, tribes rule, not the government. A home to Bedouin tribes, oil fields and AK-47's, Ma'rib may leave a bad taste in one's mouth.
Ma'rib, however, isn't that bad after all; this Bedouin country is the center of the archeological discovery of an ancient kingdom and its Antique dam, one of the world wonders of the antiquity, along with the renowned Arsh Bilgis (The Thrown of Sheba) and the Temple of the Moon, the most common metaphor used to depict the ancient south Arabia.
Believed by historians to date back to around 1000 B.C, the construction of the Great Dam of Ma'rib was the turning point in the history of the Sabaen Kingdom. This turned the region into a green oasis, which supported a population of about 30 to 50,000 people for more than 1,000 years.
Today, there is a new dam where many Bedouin teens frolic. The men you may come across in this part of the country wear djambian (daggers worn only by the tribal chiefs in the old days) on their belt and rifle on their back. Not far from this scene are women selling little shards and flints fresh from the ruins of the old Ma'rib.
