The Glossary
Scenic road, beautiful villages and meandering wadis (valleys) create the lush tapestry of the city, known to the locals as the "Green Province." Nestled in the foothills of Ba'dan, it boasts of an auspicious position on a high hill and the emerald hue of its landscape created by the terrace fields, verdant forest and well-built stone houses on the mountain flanks, typical of Yemeni urban architecture. A city with a combination of large and small packages, old and new experiences, Ibb is an enigma sure to spark curiosity.
Throughout most of its history, Ibb flourished as an important administrative center, particularly during the rule of the Ottoman Empire under Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khatab, and maintained its position as the crossroads of caravan route from Aden to Sana'a as well as pilgrimage route to Yemen. The old city of Ibb makes for a pleasant stroll. Most of the roads cannot be easily navigated by cars, giving it a distinctly different feel from the rest of the city. Houses are built differently from those of other places and much of the woodwork was done by a population of Jewish artisans who lived in the city before the 1940's.
There are quite a number of historical buildings in the old city. Visitors will surely adore the aesthetically appealing view surrounded by thick walls of tall houses and the mosques of Al-Muzaffariyah, which is still in good shape, along with the Jibla city, which houses a 12th century dome under the Sulaihide Dynasty.
Outside the old city, the top of Jabal Rabi offers a panoramic view of the whole city and the surrounding countryside. The grand Husn al-Habb perched on three walls with a sharp cliff face is regarded as the strongest citadel in the country. A little contrast to the serene environs of the old city is the lively souk in Ibb, which is the center of agriculture and pastoral production of the region.
