A visit to Haraz Mountain can be a mind-altering experience, spanning ranges and the jagged cliffs of the mountain offer an oasis to the intrepid. Tucked between the steamy Red Sea and the ancient capital Sana'a, Haraz Mountain offers excellent hiking opportunities for all ages. Its vast trails and dirt paths link to century-old villages with a promise of delightful sceneries - fields of khat, zigzag road across lush mountaintops, and mud and stone houses.
The villages are tiny, quiet and ancient; most were built with just one door, with no electricity and in-door plumbing. Like most places in Yemen, the women usually hide or speak very little, whereas the children will run and ask to have their picture taken. Haraz, is a unique place that seems stuck in time and somehow gives a glimpse of what life was like centuries ago.
The atmosphere of Haraz is ideal retreat for recreation, away from the pulsating pressures of city life. Besides the refreshing mountain air and beautiful views there are the opportunities of invigorating walks. The village of Manakha drops steeply through a narrow canyon near the foot of Haraz. In the late afternoon, one can spot troops of baboons jumping off the high cliffs as birds soar in the azure skies.
To those who have seen everything but would like to be "astonished" over again, a visit to Haraz might be an irresistible idea.
