Danang may be considered as nothing but a portal to some of Vietnam's many attractions, but the bustling city has a distinct charm of its own. Blessed with stunning coasts, a myriad of food choices and lodgings, Danang is an ideal Asian getaway and, best of all, is accessible by land, sea or air. Located in The South central coast, the city is considered the region's commercial powerhouse, and is the fourth largest settlement in the country. Danang's name is believed to have come from the Cham word da nak, which means "opening of a big river." During the American occupation, the city was referred as the "Saigon of the North."
Urban trekkers are sure to find strolling around Danang satisfying with the numerous city attractions, such as the Ho Chi Minh Museum (showcasing the great communist leader's life) and the Museum of Cham Sculpture (built during the French era to preserve relics of the Champa Kingdom). Being a port town, trade and exchange of cultures has been a part of the local history, and proofs of these include the variety of worship places in the area, such as the Danang Cathedral (built during the French occupation in the 1920's), the Cao Dai Temple (the largest of its kind outside the Tay Ninh headquarters), and pagodas Phap Lam and Pho Da Nang.
