Unappealing as it may be at first sight, Can Gio's undeveloped and boggy environ is one of Vietnam's more diverse attractions. Located southeast of the capital city Ho Chi Minh, the cast-off district may not have pristine coasts, historically-significant architectural examples or even resident tribes but the marshland isle attracts a fair amount of tourists, scientists, and swamp enthusiasts.
UNESCO recognizes Can Gio's prime lure, the Mangrove Forest, for being the first biosphere conservation in the country. The facility boasts of hectares upon hectares of over 300 species of flora and fauna, with its lush mangrove forests housing mollusks, amphibians, and some reptiles. Boat rides around the area can be arranged and offer a good surveillance of the forest. Those who do not fancy the mosquitoes and the murky waters can head to the Can Gio Museum, which exhibits some of the wildlife found in the forest and is also a sanctuary to over a hundred kinds of primates.
