Lying at the southern tip of Mekong Delta, Ca Mau may seem unattractive at first sight. Its marshy surroundings and the constant threat of mosquitoes don't add prestige to this humble town. It takes pride, however, as one of Vietnam's biggest provincial capitals, featuring an interesting blend of laid-back sights and the genuine hospitality of the locals.
The 1997 typhoon Linda swept through town, inflicting more damage to this rather ignored location. But Ca Mau has dusted itself off and is ready to welcome tourists who prefer an offbeat destination. Probably the prime lure of the town is the rich variety of birds that inhabit the nearby swamps and forests: bird-watchers flock to this place for stork-sightings. Tourists are advised to consult with guides before heading out to the nearby marshes. Having an insect repellant ready is not at all a bad idea.
