The Glossary
The world's highest cable car, Venezuela's highest mountain, and a vivacious nightlife measure the adrenaline yardstick of Mérida as the "adventure capital" of Venezuela. An airplane ride away from Caracas, Mérida is tucked at the foot of the Andes, only 15 kilometers away from Venezuela's highest point and mountaineers' delight, Pico Bolivar. The city's main attraction is the Teleférico, the world's longest and highest cable car that leads to the 4,765-meter Pico Espejo. Many adrenaline junkies descend from Pico Espejo via mules, all-terrain vehicles or hiking. The top is usually drenched in clouds during the afternoons so it is better to ride the cable car in the morning, wearing sunscreen for the equatorial sun and jacket for the nippy elevation. Other outdoor sports such as mountain-biking, paragliding, white-water rafting, and canoeing are also available as part of special tours.
One half of the Teleférico ride to Pico Espejo is the mountainside trail to Los Nevados, trusted for its lanes of cheap backpacker posadas (bed and breakfast inns). Some foreigners stay there more than just for vacation, since Mérida is also considered a good place to study Spanish.
Flocking around Mérida's Spanish schools are bars and discos for drinking chichi Andina (pineapple and corn flour drink) or dancing salsa or joropo, Venezuela's national dance. Visiting the ‘30s-themed ghoul park of Los Aleros is also a cool way to unwind. A 45-minute drive downtown will take you to the Montaña De Los Sueños theme park, which showcases classic cars, jukeboxes and other ‘30s to ‘60s memorabilia from Venezuela's entertainment industry.
On the outskirts, the neighboring El Paramo has cold high plains full of shrubs and lagoons. A bus to Musui brings campers to the hot springs of Aguas Termales.
