The Glossary
Malekula is a treasure chest yet to be opened. The island teems with lush greens, surprising razzle dazzle of colors and an exotic array of animal life. With almost 30 local dialects, a history of man-eating natives, and tribal customs and traditions, Malekula is remarkable, a blast from the past. The island is found in the eastern central of Vanuatu, and is shaped like a sitting dog. Origins of the Malekula's peculiar name is still disputed, though there have been many anecdotes attempting an explanation. It is said that the name was derived from the French phrase, "mal à cul", which meant bad bottom, when French sailors came to the island, flashing their behinds. The name might be a bit unpleasant, but Malekula's extraordinary offerings can more than make up to that.
Though the island lacks modern facilities and proper towns, native rest houses scattered along the northwest and southeast provide accommodations. The lodgings in Malekula are for those who want to taste the splendidly-Spartan lifestyle (don't expect hot tubs or butlers). Cannibal sites and burial caves of the olden days still dot the island and fascinate the wildly curious. Though some form of cannibalism has survived until the 20th century, no man-eating fiasco has been reported in recent time. The conservation facility up north, in the ‘dog's snout,' is an ideal place for bird-watching. A nifty note to travelers who encounter natives is to treat them with due respect. The Golden Rule may be clichéd, but it is universal.
South of Malekula is a small group of atolls teeming with coral gardens. A boat ride away from Point Douecere is the Maskelynes. The current may be stronger, so it is advisable to take extra care when diving and snorkeling.
