Epi Travel Guide
Trekking through the lush forests, exploring the white-sand beaches, and getting to know the locals seem to sum up an unforgettable Vanuatu vacation, specifically in the island of Epi. Conveniently located in the middle of islands Ambrym and Efate, Epi has two airfields in Lamen Bay (north) and in Valdesir (south), making it accessible on either ends.
Epi's coasts are blessed with abundant marine life and azure waters. Lamen Bay is a tourist attraction on its own with the colorful reefs nearby, but the real stars of the place are the resident dugongs and turtles. Most of them are friendly, and would even allow visitors to get close; a nifty advice would be to consult with a guide first before approaching. The Nikaura Marine Protected Area located just southeast of the Bay. The conservation area was established to preserve the local aquatic habitat, but luckily diving and snorkeling are allowed. A good surfing spot just north invites those who prefer to rip waves.
Epi's terrain, on the other hand, offers no disappointment to avid trekkers. A hike to the mountainous central region can be arranged, and the nature trails also feature the island's tropical flora and fauna. It is ideal to go to the villages such as Mate and Nul to rest and to meet the locals. Tourists can chat with the women as they prepare laplap (meat cooked in coconut milk), while the men make kava (traditional beverage); if lucky, one might experience a genuine village feast, complete with native delicacies and folk music.
