Offering a range of activities and attractions, Efate seems like a tropical paradise and more. The island is a playground of Melanesian-European cultures, tucked-away beaches lapped upon by cerulean waters, first class accommodations and fancy restaurants, and best of all: an international airport for easy access.
Efate is situated in the middle of the Vanuatu mini-archipelago, east of Australia. The island's strategic location and topography made it a constant target of invasion attempts, thus infusing the native culture with those of the colonizers. The island even served as a US Military base back in World War II. Today, Efate is the country's tourism hub, partly because it is home to the national capital Port Vila.
Being the largest and most densely populated city in Vanuatu, Port Vila takes pride on its urbanized yet laid-back lifestyle. Situated south of the island, it has witnessed the country's unfolding history. Fortunately, the local government has taken measures to preserve the country's cultural heritage. The old buildings such as the French and the British residencies, and the Georges Pompidou Building dating back to the colonial times are now used as government offices. The National Museum and the Michoutouchkine & Pilioko Foundation Art Gallery display rustic Oceanic artifacts, relics, among others.
The isles near Efate give visitors a slice of the island life. Up north is Nguna, an atoll boasting of pristine beaches and peaceful atmosphere. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of Efate are the islands Erakor and Iritiki, both just a boat ride away from Port Vila. One can just grab a beer and watch the sun descend get swallowed up by the Pacific, or have that dreamy, long stroll by the beach often seen in the movies.
