Aneityum is a lost Eden in Vanuatu's southern frontier. The island features white-sand beaches and a long sliver of coral reefs lining at least three-quarters of the coastline. The verdant forests provide an ideal home to various exotic species of fauna and flora, especially to more than 80 species of orchids. Aneityum is the ideal getaway to those who fancy long nature walks and isolated diving and snorkeling sites, as well as a great place to hang out in the beach, without the commercial buzz of resorts and other sophisticated establishments.
Located southeast of Tanna Island, Aneityum is accessible via the airport on the satellite island of Inyeug (also known as Mystery Island) just off the south coast. It is said that Aneityum (or Anatom) had been thickly populated in the past until the coming of the European visitors who brought numerous diseases. The island is also a disputed land, claimed to be the territory of the neighboring New Caledonia, though locals consider the island as part of their ancestral territory.
This piece of paradise offers numerous underwater wreckages and coral gardens that make it a favorite destination of avid divers and snorkelers. The southern shores and Mystery Island have vibrant coral gardens underneath the bright azure waters. The southeast port in Umetch is a good place for surfing because of the crisp eastern winds that push high waves to the shore. Meanwhile, the mainland is an excellent venue for nature treks and birdwatching, and it also has a number of tourist attractions that make postcards green with envy. To the north is Port Patrick, which gives tourists that picturesque view of the nearby beaches, and if lucky, one can perchance see the feeding turtles along the reef. Those who seek a more challenging trek can try and conquer Mt. Inrerow Atahein, an extinct volcano found in western Aneityum, and be rewarded with a fantastic view of the island and the great Pacific Ocean.
