Ambae Travel Guide
Ambae is a daredevil's fantasy, steep with dangerous terrain, challenging environment and unpredictable scenario-all wrapped up in the irresistible package of a tropical getaway. At the heart of the island is Manaro, an active volcano whose stunning crater lakes, no doubt the island's prime attractions, look like menacing bodies of water. Located at the north central part of Vanuatu, Ambae has no established towns, except for Penama's provincial capital Saratamata to the east. The island's beauty is haunting and eccentric. The covert tropical paradise Bali Hai in American author James Michener's novel Tales of the South Pacific is said to be Ambae.
Tourists who want to scale the volcano are advised not to pack a lot of gear as it would be a rough way up: damp, steep tracks and the risky nature of the place make for a slippery and difficult journey. Avid trekkers who dare to lug around their things and camp out by the lakes are advised to take the safer yet longer northern route to the summit. From the guesthouse, it is a four-hour climb leading to the biggest of the three crater lakes, Manaro Lakua ("lakua" meaning big), the "friendliest" to tourists. A camp site nearby provides a venue from where to pitch tents. Beside the "gentle giant" is Lake Vui, the most perilous of the three. The lake is the main crater of Manaro, so tourists are advised not to get too close. The third and smallest of them all is Manaro Ngoru, which is usually dried up.
