Samarkand Travel Guide
Arguably one of the most famous of all the cities in the Republic of Uzbekistan, Samarkand bears the tell-tale marks of its more than 2,500 years of cultural and historical heritage. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is located right in the heart of the legendary Silk Road in Central Asia. It is a land overflowing with majestic monuments and museums that boast of lots of fascinating relics, artifacts and manuscripts. Truly, it is a wonder of a city that amazes and awes its visitors.
In ancient times, travelers and locals alike dubbed the city as the "Gem of the East," owing to its incredible architectural beauty. Its main attraction is the Registan Square - which is a stunning complex and a virtual feast for the eyes. There is also the renowned 15th century Bibi-Khonym Mosque, one of the most prominent architectural wonders in the region. In addition, one should visit the Shah-i-Zinda - reputed as the "street of the dead," a complex containing a plethora of mausoleums and holy sites wherein so many prominent figures of the region lie buried.
Samarkand is also recognized as the supposed site of the tomb of the Bible's Prophet Daniel, a well-known figure in the story of the Hebrew people. No wonder that the place generates a lot of buzz among its tourist population, although most of them are suspicious about the authenticity of the claim. Another marvel of this city is the remains of the telescope of Ulugbek, who was a renowned astronomer of the country instrumental in helping the amazing progress of that particular field of study in the area.
