Bukhara Travel Guide
Historic Bukhara is widely recognized as Central Asia's holiest city. Rich in culture and beauty, it is most famous for being one of the legendary trading towns located along the Silk Road. Considered as one of the treasures of the Republic of Uzbekistan, its amazing and sacred heritage had led UNESCO to declare it a World Heritage Site in 1993. It is claimed to have been inhabited for around five millennia, and served as a prestigious learning hub that was renowned throughout the entire Muslim world.
Said to be established in 500 BC, this 2,500-year-old city served as a major part of the great Persian Empire until it was eventually overrun by Arab invaders in 650 AD. This Islamic occupation was instrumental in constructing numerous Muslim infrastructure and archaeological sites, thereby marking its influence indelibly on the city's culture and landscape. Bukhara's most famous attraction is the 11th century Kalyan Minaret - once the tallest edifice in Central Asia, and also its most recognizable landmark. Legend has it that when the infamous Genghis Khan sacked and destroyed the city, he spared it because he was utterly fascinated with its elegance and beauty.
Tourists can also visit the renowned Ismail Samani Mausoleum, one of the finest examples of Central Asian architecture. Constructed in the 9th century, it is the sanctuary for the remains of Ismail Samani, a prominent figure in the Persian Empire and the founder of its last ruling dynasty. Another destination of interest is the Chashma-Ayub Mausoleum, known as Job's Well. Bukhara is noted for the numerous famous and important people who helped shape the history of the region and its surroundings. A significant example is the great Sheikh Nakshband, who was instrumental in establishing the Sufi approach to Islam and philosophy. Others worthy of recognition are Abubakr Narshakhi - a gifted writer who pioneered the chronicling of Bukhara's history, Ismatallah Bukhari - a renowned poet in the Timurid period, and Mirza Abd al-Aziz Bukhari - an exceptional calligrapher, just to name a few.
