The Glossary
Intellectuality is the credo of Montevideo, Uruguay's capital and provider of the highest quality of life in Latin America. Often called the "Switzerland of South America" for its stable democracy and social benefits like free education, Montevideo is a ground zero for honing minds and exercising the artistic spirit through music, dance, architecture, and shopping for rare finds. Montevideo can be seen in its full regalia atop the Torre de las Telecomunicaciones, the country's tallest building.
The city's action starts with Ciudad Vieja, the pulse of historic Montevideo, where soiled skyscrapers wrestle for space with art deco and neoclassical buildings such as the Solis Theatre, Uruguay's oldest theater, newly-restored with columns designed by world-renowned architect Philippe Starck.
There are also museums such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Montevideo Cabildo, the Artigas Mausoleum, Museo Romántico and Casa Rivera, which provide insights on Uruguayan history through paintings, antique furniture and artifacts. Outside these Old-World edifices are plazas full of boldly-painted cafés, galleries, and honking taxis heading to the Mercado del Puerto, the city's old market building at the hem of Pérez Castellano, a wrought-iron superstructure that shields a throng of affordable parillas (steak houses).
Every Saturday afternoons, artists and street musicians hang out at the Mercado for medio y medio cocktail (half-sweet white wine, half-white sparkling wine). The next day, people conglomerate at the Tristáan Narvaja street market for bookstores, antiques, furniture, pets, and rare objects (such as false teeth!).
Ciudad Vieja's outskirts are also full of color and activity. Dancing clubs are all over for trying Uruguay's unique tango, candombe and murga. The Estadio Centario stadium hosts football games such as the FIFA World Cup. Even in winter, people still go to Pocitos Beach to play volleyball, in Punta Carretas for golf, or Ramirez Beach for kite surfing.
