Seated on a pedestal, with River Trent flowing at her feet, the "Queen of Midlands"-Nottingham rests proud, showcasing her broad streets on which line the numerous galleries and parks and in whose soils were born her brilliant sons-Nuclear Physicist George Green; William Booth-the founder of the Salvation Army; and Lord Byron and D H Lawrence, romantic writers! On her "right out of a fairy-tale land", was spun the wondrous tale of Robin Hood.
Nottingham Castle is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent castles in the United Kingdom, which was home to the Sheriff of Nottingham. Outside the castle wall, is the statute of Robin Hood, who was often at loggerheads with the Sheriff! Today, the castle boasts of some beautifully landscaped gardens and a museum.
A stone's throw away from the castle is "The Tales of Robin Hood", Experience the thrill of getting transported to medieval Nottingham, in unique cars, and get chased in the woods by the Sheriff, and at dusk, have a sumptuous meal along with Robin and his sweetheart Marian, with a band playing only for you!
Close by, is a watering hole The Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem with nooks, staircases and hidden chambers whose taps serve beer and ales! It is the oldest pub in UK, dating back to 1189! The Brewhouse Yard Museum, situated very close to "Trip to Jerusalem", is housed in five, 17th century cottages depicting life in Nottingham spanning 300 years! You will be transported back in time to the Victorian era, as you pass by the homes of that time, catching glimpse of old kitchens and observe how water was pumped back then!
You can experience the thrill of shopping in the row of shops depicting the 1920's style. Among the line of shops, are pawn shops, ironmongers, barbershops, cobblers, music shop, a Victorian chemist and Edwardian grocery shop. The gallery also showcases the kind of things used during those times and simulates the sights, touch and even smells of the times.
Below the hills of Nottingham, are more than 400 caves popularly known as The Caves of Nottingham, which were used for storage purposes of food and war-weapons. They were also used as bomb-shelters during World War II.
