Poltava is a worthy destination thanks to its eventful and preserved history. It was on the Vorskla River, located outside the city, that Peter the Great's army became victorious against the Ukrainian Cossacks in 1709. The city then tasted local victory in the 19th century, giving birth to the Modern Ukrainian language. Ironically, today, most people here speak Russian.
Poltava's past is preserved in the semicircle-shaped Neoclassical square in the city's center. The square includes a Tuscan column that commemorates the Battle of Poltava, highlighting the 18 Swedish cannons captured during the battle. Peter the Great is also remembered in a wooden shrine that dates back to the 17th century.
There is also the five-domed city cathedral that showcases Ukraine's unique Cossack Baroque style. Another Baroque site is the church dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. This church was rebuilt in the 1900s but had been destroyed in 1934.
