Kharkiv claims to be the source of the Soviet nuclear industry. As such, over 100,000 of the population take part in nuclear studies at the town's university. Although most signs are in Cyrillic, there is an assured multicultural diversity in the town because of the presence of foreign students. Because of its high student population, Kharkiv's atmosphere is at its peak during the school year seasons.
Visitors tired from Kharkiv's bustling intellectual atmosphere may unwind by exploring the gorgeous buildings around the city. Considered as Kharkiv's most stunning architectural display is the Blagovishensky Cathedral, whose red and gold walls stand at the city's center. Another good destination is the Liberty Square, one of the largest central squares in Europe. The square is lined with many cafés and stores.
For more ancient architecture, there is the Uspenski Cathedral. The church traces back to 1770 and its bell tower had witnessed an 1812 war victory.
