Resting along the scenic landscape of the Black Sea Peninsula is Crimea, Ukraine's only autonomous region. Connected to the rest of Ukraine by a narrow strip of land, this island is an ideal isolated getaway. This side of Ukraine is a unique treasure to behold with its lush coastline of cypress and juniper trees set against high-rising mountain cliffs. Its Mediterranean-like atmosphere drew several invasions from Greeks, Goths, Cimmerians, and Persians in its early history. Today, Crimea seem to command authority with its sweeping views of interesting land and rock formations.
Crimea is a popular Russian tourist destination, so it is usually expected that beaches here are busy during their peak season. There is a wide array of coastal beach cities to choose from, and their shorelines reach to a total of almost 2000 meters.
For a deeper insight into Crimea's history, a visit to the town of Bakhchisaray is advised. Bakhchisaray was the site of the Crimean Khanate's glory days from the 15th to 18th centuries. Another town worth visiting is Balaklava, home to three Genoese towers. The towers offer an awesome aerial view of the Black Sea and its cove.
Tourists who are after a more recent history could visit the Livadia Palace, which was once the summer retreat of Nicolas II, the last Russian tsar. It was also where Franklin Roosevelt and other Americans stayed during the Yalta Conference in 1945. Aside from its educational museum displays, the Livadia is a charming demonstration of Neo-Renaissance style. Each room inside is furnished differently, including an English billiard room, a Jacob-designed maple wood study, and a Neo-Baroque dining room.
The Swallow's Nest could be equally remarkable, built on the 40-meter high Aurora Cliff in the Crimean shore of southern Ukraine. It was originally built in 1895 for a Russian general who gave it the nickname the "Love Castle." Its breathtaking location and Neo-Gothic architecture make it a popular tourist attraction in Crimea.
