Erbent Oasis Travel Guide
Known for its remarkable nomadic culture, the Erbent Oasis in the vast expanse of northern Turkmenistan is a paradise for hikers, backpackers and naturalists wanting to explore a largely unspoiled frontier. A land that time forgot, it is shrouded in mysticism and ancient lore - where nomadic living is the norm and traditional customs endure up to the modern age. Highways that stretch all the way to the country capital Ashgabat are riddled not with automobiles, but with trusty old camels. With the refreshing ambiance of an out-of-the-way village, the place endears itself to visitors because it immerses them in the old-fashioned culture of natives.
Boasting of lush green forests and amazingly diverse wildlife, the oasis is nature at its best. Living with the Teke people promises to be an experience unlike any other, including setting up camp inside traditional yurt tents and appropriating their lifestyle and daily activities. Visitors can watch them gather and comb wool from which they fashion beautiful cloth masterpieces. There is also the baking of the village staple - dark-colored bread that is made using the unique Tamdyr oven. One can also find the incredibly rare Turkmen hunting dog, the Tazi, prominent in the country's literature. As a sign of camaraderie, travelers are invited to drink the chal - an alcoholic beverage made from fermented camel's milk. For the uninitiated, they will find it to have an extremely sour taste, and a look at the tell-tale signs on their faces says that it is far from their usual cup of tea.
