The original Turkmen are traditionally nomads and horsemen. These ways of life was only slightly interrupted during the invasion of Russia, but to this day, there are numerous Turkmen who live by these traditions and social norms. Women remain to be good weavers of the famous gillams or the yomut rug. These are hand-woven mats, which usually comes with intricate designs and details. And the men still wear the national hat called telpek. These are sheepskin headgears that look like an afro. There are citizens who use the original Turkmen language, but majority speaks Russian. They practice the Sunni Islam religion, but are rather loose in following its rules and customs.
