Through time, Ephesus has been linked with several famous personalities throughout history, including St. Paul of Tarsus, who was tried at the ancient Great Theater of Ephesus, as well as Greek philosopher Heraclitus, Byzantine bard Manuel Philes, and famous Greek sculptor Agasias.
As an ancient Greco-Roman city on the west coast of Turkey, Ephesus is made famous by its Roman and Grecian ruins such as the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. There are also the Terraced Houses or the Temple of Hadrian, the Roman Library of Celsus, the Fountain of Trajan, the Gates of Hercules and Augustus, and the Gymnasium of Vedius.
Apart from its reputation as an illustrious town housing the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, Ephesus has also earned a lot of "publicity" in the Bible as the location of one of the first seven churches of Asia. The city was also referred to as the city of "Seven Sleepers" in the Book of Revelation, as the site of a gladiator's graveyard, and as the sole spot where the Gospel of Saint John was said to have been written.
The grandiosity of Ephesus, however, dwindled when the Temple of Artemis was destroyed and robbed by a gang led by St. John Chrysostom. The city also experienced decline when it was smashed by an earthquake and was subjected to erosion by the Cayster River.
Today, the ruins at Ephesus are considered as cultural and historical havens that may transport tourists back in time when belief in Greek and Roman gods rule among the people. Visitors may stroll down the grand marble street of Curetes Way, and along the way have a glimpse of the hand mosaics at Curetes. The road then leads to the Arcadian Way, then to a harbor where the Great Theater of Ephesus is located.
