The Glossary
Since it set at the intersection of three countries: Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, Edirne is also at the crossroads of cultures and civilizations. The town's status as a former capital of the Ottoman Empire accounts for its notable historical structures like palaces, religious complexes, bazaars, and elegant minarets and domes, which are just some of the town's offerings as the main hub of old and modern Turkey.
Since it is located at the confluence of Meric and Tunca Rivers, the verdant plains of Edirne bring visitors closer to the bustling metropolis of Istanbul. Apart from being a gateway to bigger destinations, visitors coming to this side of Turkey may also have a glimpse into the glorious days of the country's ancient rulers.
Among Edirne's attractions is the ancient Edirne Palace of the late Sultan Murat II and the legendary Selimiye Mosque, the highest of all minarets in Turkey. Named after the late Sultan Selim II, the Selimiye Mosque outshines Istanbul's St. Sophia in terms of height and grandeur. Other must-visit exquisite mosques in town include the Ikinci Beyazit Kulliyesi, Serefeli, Eski Camii, and Muradiya Mosque, which are all notable for their unique calligraphic inscriptions and historical wealth.
Edirne's narrow streets is replete with old world appeal as these are lined with Ottoman houses, cafés, restaurants, and caravansaries such as the Rustem Pasha and Ekmekcioglu Ahmet Pasha; bazaars such as Arasta, Saraclar Caddesi, and Maarif Caddesi; and public baths including Tahtakale, Mezit Bey, Gazi Mihal and Sokullu Mehmet Pasa.
The city also boasts of old bridges that stand the test of time. Among these is Tunca Meric Bridge, which arches over the Ergene River and the Edirne Sayari. Galleries like Contemporary Art and Sculpture Museum, Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum and Urban History Museum are also good options to have a broad viewer at the town's historical timeline.
Furthermore, Edirne managed to retain its vibrant customs and traditions. Annually, the town holds a festival called Kirkpinar, which celebrates the traditional sport called yagli gures or oil wrestling, considered as the national sport of the Turks. The festival takes place in a palace called Sarayici.
