The Glossary
Located in the Aegean Coast, Eceabat or Maydos is a town tucked near the illustrious World War I Gallipoli Battlefields, which serves as a war memorial for approximately 120,000 soldiers from Turkey, New Zealand, France and Australia. Escaping to Eceabat could be one of the possibilities visitors may want to ponder on if they want to avoid the buzz of Istanbul and the city rush of Canakkale.
Formerly a humble fishing hamlet named Maydos, Eceabat was heavily damaged during the advent of World War I. However, since the town was renovated over the years, it is now dotted with towering buildings and apartments.
Since Eceabat is lying on Turkey's waterfront, visitors can get a chance to see an average of 90 ships, yachts and luxury liners a day in different sizes and shapes as they pass through the city on their way to Istanbul or to Russia.
Once they get to the core of Eceabat, tourists may feel the rustic appeal that the town exudes. Just by simply sitting at the docks, one may be enthralled by the passing tiny boats or by the sweeping views of Dardanelle, a quaint Turkish town.
Culture and history buffs may also want to have a short trip to Kilitbahir Castle to see the Ottoman fortification and its newly revamped museum, which showcases the relics of the Gallipoli Crusade. The Naval and Cannakale Museum is also another point of interest where visitors may get to see remnants of Turkey's battle history and old World War I photos.
Visitors can also stroll along the back alleys of Eceabat to see the classic village life of the people. They can also take a bus to visit the pristine beaches near the town, take a diving excursion to see World War I wrecks, or explore cultural cities such as Troy and Assos.
