The final stop before Iran is Dogubayazit, a town that used to be a hippie trail to India. Set in Eastern Anatolia, the town has some of the sites that made Turkey earn a worldwide recall. Among these attractions are the dramatic Ishak Pasha Palace and the snow-capped Mount Ararat, said to be the place where the fabled Noah's Ark landed.
Apart from having a dreamlike view of Mount Ararat, visitors might also enjoy spending some time with the accommodating locals. The people living in Dogubayazit still dwell in mud houses near the mountainside, where they grow grains and grasses for their livestock. A visit to a village may enable travelers to get to know how locals live with their extended families under one roof. It is also a good opportunity to try the villagers' specialties such as the sweet pastries lokum and baklava.
Tucked between the border gate of Gurbulak and the village of Sancavus is an 80-year-old meteor crater. Set in the upper east of the town is the Noah's Ark National Park, where one can have a reinvigorating bath in a hot spring or hamam. Just 18 kilometers away from the city center is Bubi Mountain, a famous ski spot.
Just outside of the town is an Ice Cave that can be found at the village of Hallac. Set in the remote village of Taslica is the lava bed of Lake Balik Golu. There are also the ruins of Urartu Temples, which bear an evidence of the civilizations that settled in the region for centuries.
