Basalt city walls, mosques, Neolithic museums and tea gardens all encapsulate the essence of Diyarkabakir, a city in Southeastern Anatolia and a home to proud Kurdish tradition. Despite of its small size, the town harbors many treasures. Up to this day, Diyarbakir still carries a medieval aura through its surrounding fortification walls named Maliksah Burcu, Nur Burcu and Yedi Kardes Burcu, which are considered as one among the most well-preserved walls in the world after the legendary Great Wall of China.
The walls, which stand up to 12 meters high, are replete with 82 watchtowers. They serve as among the city's main draws due to their Seljuk inscriptions, bas reliefs, and daunting Towers of Nur and Tower of Seven Brothers. Alongside the walls are stone caravanserais that are home to the Otel Buyuk Kervansary.
Near the city walls is Deliler Han, where visitors can have a chance to go back in time by rummaging through the area's stable and main structure, which was used as a terminus of caravans travelling on the Silk Road to Mecca.
Other fascinating sights at the city center include a heap of Arable-style mosques such as the ornate Behram Pasa Camii, the city's largest Persian mosque, which can be seen alongside Behram Safa Camii, the tapered Seyh Mutahhar, and Nebi Camii, famed for is black and white color.
The churches of Keldani Kilisesi and Meryem Ana Kilisesi are also worth visiting especially for visitors who want to spend some quiet time. Culture buffs, on the other hand, might as well want to drop by at the Archeology Museum or the Cahit Sitki Taranci Museum, which is famous for keeping the furniture of the late Turkish poet Cahit Taranci.
