Lying conveniently in Mugla Province is the riverine town of Dalyan, a recommended refuge for those looking for an idyllic countryside without having to go far from the beaten track. Originally founded as a lowly fishing village, Dalyan is now a nature reserve for being the sanctuary of endangered loggerhead turtles.
Today, despite its sudden transformation and modernization, much of Dalyan still retains its old-world allure not only as a conservation area but as a thriving market town offering havens for relaxation.
Since life in Dalyan revolves around the Dalyan Cayi River, visitors coming in can have a boat ride that will take them up and down the river, and would eventually enable them to conquer the river's wild rapids. After which, they can ride a dolmus (shared taxi) that will take them to the nearby laidback resorts and villages of Marmaris, Fethiye, and Kaunos, which is also known for its centuries-old ruins.
The wetlands found in Dalyan can also be a good point to start eco-tours. Iztuzu Beach, Lycian rock tombs, and Turtle Beach are where visitors can feast on a plethora of marine animals and birdlife. Over 150 species of birds thrive in these areas, including storks, kingfishers, cranes, and sparrows.
After a long day, visitors can get to the many restaurants around Dalyan. These offer inexpensive meals where one can try Turkish cuisine. Among the popular meals include adana kebap (lean ground mutton), iskender kebap (beef tenderloin) and ramadan kebab (ground lamb).
