Once a traveler enters the otherworldly Turkish region of Cappadocia, he will be in a sweeping lunar landscape that will surely fire the imagination at the very first sight. With a landscape reminiscent of the moon, Cappadocia could have served as its earthy mock-up. Auspiciously nestled in the central region of the Nevsehir Province of Anatolia (formerly Asia Minor), the area has long been a haven of archeology buffs and backpackers but now it's opening its doors to a whole new breed of visitors - the younger crowd.
This UNESCO World Heritage site known as Göreme National Park was first settled during the Roman period. Today, it is regarded as Turkey's most sought after destination for the stunning fairy chimney formation that reach about 130 feet, eerie castles, conical spires, turrets and cliffs speckled with baffling gaps and cracks offering a dizzying respite. With more than 500,000 visitors each year, Cappadocia is worthy to be included as one of the "must see sights before you die."
Indeed, Cappadocia entails a whole lot of leisure trips and overwhelming opportunities of sightseeing. The Ihlara Valley, for instance, offers a sight of ancient churches hemmed in the edges of the valley to the river while the Ala Da%u011Flar National Park challenges visitors to try riding the rapids of the Zamanti River. Equally beguiling are the subterranean cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakl%u0131 and the Greek mansions in the streets of Mustafapasa. Though the cave dwellers are gone, the prehistoric feel hovers above the cave hotels and rock hewn churches found at the famed Göreme Open-Air Museum.
Of course a visit to Cappadocia is incomplete without floating over the fairy chimneys in a hot-air balloon which is best done in the early morning, and visiting the sprawling bazaar at Urgup to the vibrant caravanserai. Last but not the least, one should not forget to sip some local wines and can even be a wine connoisseur before one goes to bed.
