The Glossary
Tagged as one of the most intriguing destinations in the year 2006 by the prestigious New York Times Magazine, Bodrum has long been the most desired summer retreat of the local Turkish holidaymakers. For years, the main draw of this seaside resort town has been its troves of historical treasures. In a stroll around its streets, one might just stand in awe for every landmark narrates its own tale. Today, however, this ancient fishing hamlet, wedged against the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, seems to attract visitors on account of its natural beauty itself.
Its shipyards and yachts, coming all the way from the ports of Monte Carlo and Naples, somehow insinuate its foreboding prominence, not to mention the paparazzi rummaging the seaside spotting Hollywood actors and actresses lazing around.
Moreover, during the height of the summer months, Bodrum receives a teeming number of beachcombers which somehow sends a French Riviera vibe sans the regatta and the "le vieux port "or the so called old port in St. Tropez. Who wouldn't be captivated with a view of the cerulean coast looming in the horizon replete with white-washed dwellings dappled with rolling greens of olives and purple bougainvilleas swaying quietly?
Getting to the town center, visitors will be greeted with a number of attractions such as the Mausoleum of Mausolus—formerly Halicarnassus- which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the castle of St. Peter standing in the sea front, and the newly revamped Myndos Gate.
Other interesting places to visit include the Bodrum Amphitheatre, Glass-Shipwreck Exhibit, Museum of Underwater Archaeology and the white Windmills in Bodrum. Visitors can also indulge in a reinvigorating mud bath or a dip in one of the fine hamams around the town apart from engaging in the usual water sports activities such as diving, windsurfing and boat tours.
