The antiquarian town of Behramkale & Assos is a historical town set in the Gulf of Edremit of the Aegean Region of Turkey. At first glance, the town could be mistaken as a slice of Athens, Greece, for the ubiquity of ruined temples and Hellenistic structures found in its landscape which remind us easily of the Grecian country. Here visitors can find a classic Doric Temple of Athena, an Ancient Theater of Assos, rows of old stone houses lining the cobblestone street that are now serving as the pension house, inns and restaurants to the public. Though many of the old building are ruined, Behramkale & Assos is still active serving as a seaport for Troad while its beach caters to weekenders and backpackers who are frequent visitors of the town.
History says that the town was once a prosperous safe haven for great thinkers such as Aristotle and Plato and the pious saint St. Paul. However, the "glorious days" of ancient Assos didn't last due to the invasion of the Persians followed by the Greek conqueror Alexander the Great.
Today, much of the surrounding area of Behramkale & Assos can be best admired from the summit of the Trachyte Crag. Here one can take a splendid vista of the town up to the expanse of Gulf of Edremit where they can get the rambling scenes of its agoras or marketplace, the people coming in and out of the mosque, its stunning fortress and acropolis built in the 14th century by an Ottoman sultan named Murat I and the towering Mount Ida of Phrygia and Tuzla River in its northern edge.
Back to the town center, they can stroll around the peaceful harbor of Behramkale, a popular detour of the Turkish community and those visitors who just want to spend some quiet time away from the madding crowd. From here, they can either rent a boat to tour around the nearby hamlets or just linger for a while to see how the bohemian atmosphere of Behramkale & Assos changes its color from dusk to dawn. Without a doubt, Behramkale & Assos retains its charm even amidst the multifarious attractions of the modern world.
