Its innate charm and tranquility had made the slim strip of Ayvalik, or the "Place of Quince" as the locals put it, a regular tourist destination sending ready signals to all tourists from different corners of the globe to savor its unspoilt nature and grandeur. With its pristine waters and landscape - a view of old Greek houses, boats moored on the shore and the combined smell of pine and olive that permeates the air, the place has everything to offer visitors and they couldn't ask for more.
For years seasoned travelers and backpackers are beguiled by the "complete holiday package" that Ayvalik offers to visitors looking for that "one great getaway." Other than the seaside resorts of Altinova Beach and Sarimsakli, the presence of historical buildings such as the neo classical Ayvalik Houses, the Leka and Moonlight Monastery and the mosques of C%u0131narl%u0131 Camii and Saatli Camii add to the visitors'delight. Devotees may also visit the 18th century Taksiyarhis Church or the Saint Nicola Church on Alibey Island.
The Alibey or Cunda Island is a good point to start the island hopping odyssey. Here they can rummage through the ruined monasteries, old stone houses, museums and Greek churches like the Tajksiyarhis Church. Getting to the northern edge of the islands will reveal the Patriça Nature Reserve and the remains of the Greek Ayisigi Manastiri, an unexplored offshore island, up to the remote Kiz, Kerbala Rocks and Yuvarlak Island, a haven of scuba divers.
To catch a breathtaking view of the sunset, visitors can head to the Seytan Sofrasi or the so called Devil's Table. The hillock offers a mesmerizing view of the whole town overlooking small islets, coves and fjords in a bird's eye view.
A visit to Ayvalik is incomplete without visiting the backstreets of the town peppered with towering brick chimneys of olive oil factories replete with quaint old houses which radiate an old world appeal that is hard to resist.
