The Glossary
Started as a caravan crossroads and a cultural center of the arts, the destiny of Ankara changed quickly at the beginning of the 19th century. However, due to its strategic military role as a base of the War of Liberation, Ankara regained its prominence again and became the capital of the new Turkish Republic. Lying in the eastern lip of the great Anatolian Plateau, the city that fell under the Ottomans, Byzantines and the Romans by turn, now finds its way in the tourist trail and is making a "real" grand comeback.
The first thing that a visitor might notice on their first visit is the gentle touch of the mystical east that they can find just by wandering around. Among the landmarks to visit are the Atakule Tower famed for its revolving restaurant and glass lift and some troves of treasures such as the ruined citadel, the Roman Theater and bath and the Temple of Augustus. After feasting on a classic Anatolian fare, visitors can steal a look from the top of the tower to get a panoramic view of the whole city.
The mosques of Hac%u0131 Bayram Camii and Kocatepe Camii are other possible detours around the town. Haci Bayram and Kocatepe are renowned as two of the largest mosques in the world. In addition, the mausoleum of An%u0131t Kabir is also worth visiting especially to those who are interested in modern Turkey's history.
Coming out of those sites, visitors can encounter the bustle of the streets filled with bars and with students hanging around. Since this section of the city is dominated by a military base, a stop for a boat ride here during lazy Saturday afternoon can be a rewarding experience. On the other hand, they can also visit the many gardens and pools speckled around the city such as the Botanik Park, the tea gardens of Luna Park and the water city of Aqua Park Club. Here, it is not the children alone who appreciate the slides and water sports activities.
Apart from the several parks, the museums situated in the city are also worth visiting in order to get an idea about Ankara in general. Popular museums include the Ethnography Museum which houses the "real treasure" of Ankara; the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations which displays the "1997 Best European Museum Award"; the Museum of The War of Independence; the classic Open-Air Steam Locomotive Museum; and of course the Painting and Sculpture Museum, prominent for displaying contemporary Turkish art.
