The Glossary
Dubbed as the "Pearl of Turkish Riviera," Alanya is just another lure of Turkey besides its famous hammam or Turkish bath. Nestled auspiciously at the southeastern rim of Turkey's coast and bordered by the Taurus Mountain Ranges, Alanya has been developed to allure an increasing number of European holiday makers wanting to taste the pristine waters of its beaches (the Keykubat and the Cleopatra Beach), and the sunny weather all year round, and of course to experience the wide range of modern conveniences that its offers ranging from the hotels and restaurants to the shops and bars.
Visitors can easily navigate the town center dotted with the old fortress or the so called Citadel of Kale, the octagonal prism of Red Tower, the old shipyard elbowing the manicured lawn gardens, and some traditional houses hemmed in the seafront. Apart from the Roman and Byzantine structures replete with stunning frescoes, the town also boasts a number of cisterns and Seljuk public baths which are open to the public.
Apart from appreciating the landmarks, one could also be active by engaging in all kinds of leisurely activities starting from the boat trips to the legendary Forforlu Magarasi or the Phosphorescent Cave, the Lover's Cave and the Pirates Cave. Here they can have an invigorating swim in the expanse of the phosphor cave or they can simply watch the strange shapes of stalactites and stalagmites which take a hundred years to form into a natural work of art.
To the adventurous crowd, hiking the Taurus Mountain or mountain biking could be an excellent option. If they are heading towards the rapids, they might as well try white water rafting and parasailing. Other diversions that they can try once they get into Alanya include jeep safari tours and donkey rides.
