Tofua Travel Guide
Just when one thinks that all the attractions of Tonga have been exhausted, a vast body of water boldly beckons attention. Found in the western region of the country, Tofua is well-known for its huge crater lake and the few volcanoes that dot the island. Much to the tourists' delight, the au naturale pool can be accessed after a short hike to the crater, while Mt. Lofia, the resident active volcano grumbles and grunts on the northern side of the island.
The relatively short and easy trail begins uphill from the old school in Hokala, and is only around a few hours' worth of climb. The vibrant orchid gardens and the nearby Kao Island are only a few of the amazing sights to catch while on the trek. Tourists are advised to drink in the view and keep their minds alert at all time. One will know when the crater is near when the terrain starts to get greener and greener with vegetation. The huge basin of inky blue is breathtaking, and those who have conquered the climb reap their just rewards of a hearty meal, a long dip on the lake, and a good night's rest before going back down.
