Niuas Travel Guide
They may be in Tonga's far north, but the trio of Niuas islands attracts those searching for a truly unique adventure. The volcanic isles of Niuatoputapu, Niuafo'ou, and Tafahi take pride for their strong ties to tradition and their unique goods such as the local kava (traditional alcoholic beverage) concoction, which is said to be the kingdom's best.
The Niuas offers little by way of conveniences; everything is just the way the locals want it. Tourists can go to the guesthouses in Niuatoputapu, the largest of the three, which is blessed with white-sand beaches and coral gardens that line the northern coasts. Just west of the small Hihifo village is the Niutoa Spring, an ideal place to cool down on a hot tropical day.
The islands of Niuafo'ou and Tafahi are less tourist-friendly, but are must-visits nonetheless. Niuafo'ou is well-known for its peculiar donut shape, owing to Vai Lahi (Big Lake) at its heart. There are no formal lodgings available; travelers who want to spend the night can pitch tents on the assigned campsites. Tourists can trek to the large crater lake and proceed to visit the other islets. The lake water is fit for swimming, but not for drinking. Luckily, locals are willingly to fill up bottles with clean rainwater for the thirsty. Of course, a visit to the Niuas would be incomplete without catching a glimpse of the seemingly-calm Tafahi cone volcano, where a good variety of herbs grow.
