The Ha'apai Group is a cluster of beautiful islets peppered on the vast waters between Tongatapu and Vava'u. The numerous, isolated white-sand beaches, lined with palms, and the nearby atolls teeming with corals, make Tonga's mini-archipelago a true tropical fantasy, with a little something for everyone. One can experience the genuine, rich Tongan culture and the warm hospitality if one spends some time on the islands.
Majority of Ha'apai's population is found in the east, where the larger islands are. Of the 60 or so isles in the region, less than 20 are inhabited. The prime settlement called Pangai is found in Lifuka. The city is also the main hub of all the islands' activities, thus making it a constant stop for tourists who want to explore the islands. Pangai has basic amenities such as lodgings, restaurants and markets, and it even has vehicle stations to get to the rest of the archipelago.
One needn't be very rich to enjoy Ha'apai as the islands are suitable for budget backpackers and beach bums who just want to spend an afternoon under the sultry summer sun. The azure waters are home to a rainbow of coral reefs and marine life that will certainly delight divers and snorkelers. Apart from the lodgings found in Pangai, tourists can identify camp sites and a few guesthouses for those who want to spend the night. But still, camping out and sleeping under the stars is a visual treat. A nifty note to tourists is to make sure to bring along sufficient clothes to keep warm, as the night winds can be chilly.
The nearby isles of Nukunamo, Uoleva, and Ha'ano give tourists a taste of tropical paradise with the vibrant coral gardens, pristine beaches, and the friendly locals. On the other hand, the deserted Tatafa fulfills that resounding castaway dream of spending time on an isolated island. Another unusual attraction is nature's swimming pool on the majestic Crater Lake in Tofua, west of Pangai. The elevation to the lagoon is also a good vantage point to catch a glimpse of the great Pacific as well as the rest of the islands. The view is breathtaking, almost like being on top of the world.
