Tsetang is a cultural and historical Shangri-La, with its picturesque views of mountains and rivers, imposing monasteries, and an array of multi-ethnic locals. Those who endure the transportation hassles of getting to this town are well-rewarded with a myriad of attractions, from an extravagant palace to a humble cave said to be the original dwelling of the first Tibetans. The town proper is roughly underdeveloped, but with the influx of tourists slowly gaining in number, one can expect more and more inns, restaurants, and shop to open for business.
No doubt, Tsetang's main draw is the towering Yumbu Lhakang Palace. Perched atop a hill in the Yarlhung Valley, it is the first of its kind in the country. If the Tibetan kings are grandiose when their houses are concerned, their tombs offer no disappointment. The Tombs of the Early Kings may not be appealing above the surface, but each one of the carefully arranged vaults are said to contain numerous treasures.
Another popular attraction is the Monkey Cave in Gangpo Ri (one of Tibet's holiest mountains), found in the outskirts of Tsetang. It is said that the Buddhist deity Chenrezig took a monkey's form and mated with the she-demon Sinmo. Their union is believed to have given birth to the first Tibetans. Should tourists still find themselves craving for more of Tsetang's colorful past and heritage, they can roam the town and visit the monasteries such as the Ngamchö and the Sang-ngag Zimche Nunnery.
