A quaint town set against limestone peaks, Thong Pha Phum nevertheless bustles with intense activity that belies its size. Squeezed between Thailand's Kanchanaburi and Sangkhlaburi provinces, it has fashioned itself as an important market town and a tourist attraction too, albeit one that is off the beaten trail.
Blessed with a beautiful natural landscape, it is hemmed by the banks of the Khao Laem Lake, a scenic sight that captures the attention of many travelers as though they have stepped back in time. Those looking for some relaxation time can't go wrong with the Hin Dat Hot Springs. Enclosed by a grove of trees, it is an ideal place for soaking one's troubles and weariness away-add to that the therapeutic value of hot springs. One can also find nearby the lovely Nam Tok Pha That Waterfall whose grand altitude is something to marvel at.
Nature-lovers will probably find it a good idea to swing by the the Sai Yok National Park. Sprawling over an area of 500 square kilometers, it is reputed to have been a favorite recreation spot by King Rama V. It also boasts of a mountainous terrain overrun by forests of deciduous, evergreen bamboo, and teak trees that serve as home to various kinds of wildlife. Pu Thong Elephant Park, on the other hand, invites visitors to mingle with the gentle giants.
However, the highlight of any visit to Thong Pha Phum is probably the Thong Pha Phum Market. A bustling destination for the avid shoppers, it is a chaos of shops and stalls lining the streets that hawk an assortment of goods. Burmese items such as silk, gemstone and other exotic products are worth the look. Tourists, however, are advised to double check them and be on guard for fakes.
