Often called as the "Pearl of the Andamar Sea," the island of Phuket in Thailand is almost synonymous with a beach vacation. The country's largest island, it is famous all over the world as the dream destination for many tourists. It dazzles with its awe-inspiring landscape, featuring miles and miles of picturesque shorelines, turquoise waters and lush rainforests. With its spectacular natural resources, it is definitely a paradise for swimmers, divers, backpackers and those who just want to sit back, relax and admire the scenery. However, being one of the most-visited attractions in the whole of Asia, Phuket offers very few opportunities by way of peace and quiet.
The island's beauty was first noticed when the prominent Greek philosopher Ptolemy wrote about the fascinating island in his books in 157 BC. It served as a trade harbor during the 16th century for many of the powerful empires of the time, even as far as Europe, and was eventually involved in the tin mining industry that collapsed in 1985 due to the decline in market prices. This effectively pushed the island to the brink of bankruptcy, leading it to heavily develop its tourist industry - which eventually became one of the most famous in the world.
Soon, numerous hotels sprung up, whose lofty accommodations are agreed upon as some of the finest to be found anywhere. The fun and adventure begins at day by the sparkling waters while at night, the beaches pulsate with vibrant bars and cafes sure to keep the night-owl busy and awake.
Not just a resort and a party place, Phuket boasts of a rich cultural heritage, wonderful national parks, thriving elephant safaris and of course, spectacular island-hopping trips that promise to be etched in one's memory. After decades of being one of the best destinations on the planet, Phuket has not yet lost a step, and it doesn't appear like it ever will.
